Got to face it – life is so complicated. Ray Davies

This post is more of an update than anything else. I’ve downed tools on my Notable Scumbags Of The Civil War series for the time being, not because I’ve lost interest or run out of scumbags (with the Civil War, as with any other period in human history, there’s an inexhaustible supply), more that I’ve been pursuing other matters.

I’ve been writing short stories again and so far have completed two and started another. One finished story is a pastiche of the old Continental Op yarns that Dashiell Hammett wrote; the other is a biker horror story that I’m not ashamed to admit owes more than a little to the stuff that used to appear in Easy Rider magazine. They’ve been submitted and I’ll let you know if any joy results from that. The third story that I’ve just started features Alec Pargrew, cowhand PI, the seventh one about him. I won’t get too much into details other than to say it involves rustlers who’re addicted to methedrine and hope that whets your interest.

Regular blog readers may recall that I announced back in May that Vacation’s End, a dysptopian SF story, had been accepted for publication, but that this proposed anthology later fell apart. I’m pleased to announce that I’ve found another, far better, permanent home for my love child at Latchkey Tales, an anthology published by Solarwyrm Press. Much thanks to Editor Jax Goss for accepting the story.

I’ve also had the good luck to have a crime fiction story accepted by Over My Dead Body!, one of the leading crime/mystery magazines in the USA. The Hippie Hunter is about a punk who goes to outdoor music concerts where he poses as a park policeman and shakes down hippies for their drugs. Hunter was inspired by my experience hanging out in the parking lots of RFK Stadium in Washington DC in ’94 during the Grateful Dead’s last show with Jerry Garcia. All the hippies thought I was a cop for some reason. I’ve never scared so many people in my life. Silliest experience I’ve ever had. Sincere thanks as well for this publishing credit to Fiction Editor cjung.

I’ll continue to post updates as stories are accepted and (more often) rejected. New posts on other subjects can be expected as well. Until then, Good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise as Hank Williams used to say, I hope to communicate with you soon. Here’s wishing everyone all the very best for Thanksgiving and otherwise.
