The Great Man’s Iron Horse has been accepted by Third Flatiron, a publishing company based in Boulder, Colorado and Ayr, Scotland, for their Principia Ponderosa anthology, described as “Weird Western/Steampunk: Dreadnaughts, “Wild West” world, cowboys and aliens, Victorian era, primitive post-Apocalypse, retro-futuristic inventions, and the like..”
I wrote this story in tribute to the Master of Irascibility, King of the Bumbling Boobs On Screen, the actor/writer/juggler justly called The Great Man, who else but W. C. Fields. What I wanted to do was write something like the hour long films Fields used to do in the early and mid ’30’s, a short story equivalent with Fields in the guise of the potted inventor, Eufimus T. Broadsnatch.
I’m very grateful to the staff of Third Flatiron for enjoying the story enough to accept it. Most of all though, thank you William Claude Dukenfield for all the laughs you’ve given me. To close with a Fieldsian bon mot:
“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There’s no point in being a damn fool about it.”
